Everyone in the Greater New Orleans Area knows there’s good living along the Mississippi River in the beautiful Old Jefferson neighborhood, and if you don’t know about it then you’re missing out.
Famous for the charm of its beautiful cottages and its New Orleans character, Old Jefferson is in a desirable locale, has bountiful opportunity for shopping and entertainment, and is becoming a more and more desired place to live in the Greater New Orleans real estate world all the time.
Here are a couple of the top reasons to live in Old Jefferson, starting with their renowned cottages.
Cottages with that Priceless New Orleans Character
The bread and butter of the Old Jefferson real estate market are cottages, many of them raised, that span a variety of prices and make great family homes. The name says it all: Old Jefferson has been around for a long time, and you can see the culture built into its houses.
When you live in Old Jefferson, you’ll feel like you’re living in a Louisiana-bred establishment: many of the cottages flaunt welcoming front porches with columns and banister railings, walk up staircases, wood or vinyl siding, and fireplaces. This district is simply magnetic.
All the homes in the area are close to the levee, which is equipped with a walking or biking path. You’ll see people walking their dogs on the streets, you can take a stroll around Jefferson Park, or bring the kids to play sports at Jefferson Playground.
And it’s not hard to find historic oak trees with long flowing branches and roots deep, just like the roots of Old Jefferson.
Location, Location, Location
Old Jefferson is an incredibly convenient area bordered by the Earhart Expressway on the North, the Mississippi River on the south, the Huey P. Long Bridge on the west, and Deckbar Ave. on the east.
A commute from this area to New Orleans takes twenty minutes tops, and access to the Westbank is an easy drive over the Huey P. Long Bridge, which recently was widened from two to three lanes, making the drive all that much easier and safer.
If you’re in the medical field, Oschner Hospital is nearby, and they are currently expanding the hospital to keep it in state-of-the-art condition.
Residents of Old Jefferson love the closeby Elmwood Shopping Center, which has all the shopping you can ask for, including an AMC movie theater and stores like Old Navy, Guitar Center, Banana Republic, Ashley Homestore, and Best Buy.
The most famous bar/restaurant is the Rivershack Tavern. Located on River Road, this roadhouse is famous for delicious eats, craft beer, cajun food, and amazing live music. Residents love the quirky decor and fun atmosphere of the Rivershack Tavern, which advertises itself as “New Orleans’ most unusual bar.”
And, as a bonus, Old Jefferson was recently named a Certified Bird Sanctuary -- just another cool way that the people of the area are preserving the beauty of their neighborhood.
